Big Vision Publishing Launches Kickstarter Campaign for 'The Art Of Big O' Coffee Table Book

Unprecedented Artwork Collection of the Artists of Big O Posters Published Along with Their Stories for the First Time Ever; a True Fantasy and Fantastic Art Fan's Delight

Big Vision Publishing is launching a campaign to raise funds to publish an unprecedented collection of '60s and '70s artists' work on Monday, October 7th, using the popular crowd-funding site Kickstarter. With a goal of $24,000, the funds will be used to pay for the printing and mailing of the full-color coffee table book as well as a reward catalog and companion DVD.

Michael Fishel, one of Big O's artists, and the driving force behind this book project, is hopeful that fans of artists such as Roger Dean, Rodney Matthews, H.R. Giger, Jim Burns, Martin Sharp, Heinz Edelman and more will support the campaign and help it reach its goal. The campaign will run from October 7th for 33 days to November 8th.

TheBIG Opublishing company first burst upon the swingingLondonart and music scene during those wild and wonderful psychedelic '60s, and published throughout the 1970s up until 1980 a fine collection of posters, calendars, art cards, and books. The company truly was THE one and only cutting-edge fantasy and fantastic art publisher of that age.

Fishel has been working with Nigel Suckling, himself a Big O artist, on the writing and layout of the book, the majority of which is complete. The funds raised will be used to actually print and ship the book, along with the many wonderful rewards offered to those that pledge, including original Big O art cards signed by the artist, original sketches, the calendar, DVD, and more.

The finished book will be a lavish 8.5 x 11 inch hard-cover, full-color glossy book featuring the finest artwork of the aforementioned fantasy and fantastic artists along with their personal stories and the history of Big O Publishing.

Gerry Anderson Posted December 27th, 2012

Gerry Anderson M.B.E., 1929-2012

Today I stand with Gerry's wife Mary and his son Jamie, as they face grief and great loss.

I also acknowledge the passing of a great man, an inspiration, and a friend.

Gerry Anderson was an internationally acclaimed film and TV producer and originator who, throughout his long and distinguished career, brought joy and hope to so many people (children and adults alike) through his wonderful sci-fi programmes, which include Thunderbirds, Stingray, and Captain Scarlet.

The world is a darker place without him.

I worked with Gerry for two years on the TV series Lavender Castle. It was the highlight of my own career, a treasured memory. Up until recently, we had been hoping to secure finance and make three other shows: The Andermatt Thunderbolt, Christmas Miracle, and Regor The Rescue Dog. Alas, it was not to be.

Book cover Posted November 9th, 2010

BeagleThis is a recent book cover illustration for Rodney's good friend, George Russell, pictured left. Where The Bugs Wear Boots: The Story Of A Liverpool Survivor is an autobiography covering George's life from mid Second World War 1941 to the present day. It is a humorous account of his rise from violent hooligan and biker, to polymer research scientist and no-nonsense Christian.

For this commission, Rodney produced a pencil sketch for George's approval. When he presented the sketch, Rodney remarked that there were a couple of slight changes he'd like to make for the finished artwork. George's response was "No, I like it as it is; just colour the pencil sketch!"

Magazine articles Posted January 21st, 2009

Some recent magazine articles:

Artists & Illustrators - Issue #269 ('January 2009')

Includes a three-page feature, 'Airing the Imagination', in which Rodney outlines his 40 year association with the airbrush. There are also tips on technique.

DeathRay - Issue #16 ('Winter 2008')

Contains 'The Art of Rodney Matthews', an eight-page question & answer feature by Guy Haley.

Illustration Magazine - Issue #17 ('Autumn 2008')

Features Rodney's Alice illustration At the March Hare's Table on the front cover. The magazine contains an 'Illustrating Alice' article by Selwyn Goodacre titled 'After Tenniel'. Among other Alice illustrators including Arthur Rackham, Rodney has a one-page account in his own words about his recent Alice in Wonderland book and how it came about.

New book: Alice in Wonderland Posted January 21st, 2009

Rodney's new book, Alice in Wonderland, was published at the end of 2008 by Templar Publishing. It contains 14 colour illustrations and 14 monotone pencil drawings.

This 95 page book from Templar's 'Timeless Classics' series comes as a hardback (ISBN: 978-1-84011-488-1), and a jeweled slip-cased edition (ISBN: 978-1-84011-483-6).

Masaccio, Michelangelo, Manet, Monet, Matisse, Munch, Mondrian, and Matthews. All my favourite artists begin with 'M'. Except for Mantegna (I don't mean that Mantegna doesn't start with an 'M', it's just that he's not one of my favourite artists. Neither is Macke; bloody rubbish, if you ask me).

And so Rodney Matthews is generally acknowledged to be among the greatest artists that have ever lived.

Need I say more? Please buy this book, and all his other works, because then my immense collection of his stuff will become even more valuable. Especially when he dies.

September 2000

Matthews is currently designing characters and environments for a computer game being developed by a top British company, with an American publisher. He is likely to be engaged on this project for several months to come, more news as available.

Recent jobs include work on a computer game for 989 Studios in San Diego (see the Computer Games section), preliminary conceptual art for a children's animation project by Santa Monica Studios, and a new illustration for a poster based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings commissioned by Anabas Fine Arts (this will shortly appear in the Mail Order section).

There is talk of the production of a second series of Matthews & Gerry Anderson's animated children's show Lavender Castle. It is hoped that a positive announcement will soon be made.

Rodney's first anthology book 'In Search of Forever' is now being re-printed by Paper Tiger after several years of being unavailable. This will be on sale in the mail order section as will the subsequent anthology books 'Last Ship Home' and 'Countdown to Millennium'.

The Australian jigsaw puzzle company Blue Opal is in the process of publishing four Matthews designs as puzzles. These are: 20,000 Leagues under the Sea (The Nautilus), Alice in Wonderland (At the March Hare's Table), The Wind in the Willows (The Formidable Four), and The War of the Worlds (The Martians). Each puzzle is circular and packaged in book-like boxes.
